How long should your content be?
There's no universal “right” word count. Length should match search intent: a definition page can be 300 words; a comprehensive guide might need 3,000. Both rank when they cover the topic completely. Pages that pad to hit a length target tend to underperform pages that aim for the right answer.
Sensible starting ranges
- News and announcements: 300–600 words.
- How-to guides: 800–1,500 words.
- Comparison “X vs Y” posts: 1,200–2,000 words.
- Pillar pages and definitive guides: 2,000–4,000 words.
- Product / category pages: 300–800 words plus product cards.
Reading time matters too. Most readers won't finish anything over 12 minutes. If your reading-time estimate is climbing past that, consider splitting the piece or adding a clear table of contents.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a blog post be for SEO?
There's no magic number — it should be as long as the topic genuinely warrants. That said, the median page on the first page of Google for competitive informational queries is 1,400–2,000 words. Comprehensive guides routinely run longer. Don't pad to hit a target; pad and you'll get cut.
What counts as a word?
Any sequence of non-whitespace characters. Hyphenated terms like 'state-of-the-art' count as one word. Numbers count as words. URLs are a single word. We mirror Google Docs' behavior so the count matches what you see in your editor.
Why does my word count differ from Google Docs?
Google Docs sometimes counts headings and footnotes separately. We count everything in the input box together. The bigger discrepancy is usually with hyphenated words — different tools split them differently. We treat them as single words.
Is reading time important for SEO?
Not directly, but it's a good UX signal. Reading time gives readers a quick scope check before they invest. Google indirectly rewards pages that hold attention — the time-on-page metric correlates with rankings even if it isn't a direct factor. Display reading time prominently if your average is under 8 minutes.
Should I include image captions in word count?
Yes. Captions are part of the readable content and Google indexes them. They count toward word count for SEO purposes. The tool above counts whatever you paste in.
